Golf cart batteries

Just like in your car, your battery is important to your golf cart. Tooling around on the course is fun but a dead battery will give you a day-long headache. Batteries come in 6 volt, 8 volt and 12 volt sizes and are, of course, rechargeable. Some of the more popular brands are Trojan, Ez Go, Exide and Interstate. You can spend anywhere from $50 to $500 for a golf cart battery, depending on the brand and the voltage.

The top batteries have a high cycle life (how many times you can charge and discharge the batteries before you have to buy new ones). The cycle life depends on how deeply you discharge the batteries before you recharge them, and how often you cycle them.
As batteries age, you will experience longer charging time and/or higher finish rate (higher amperage at the end of the charge). Usually older batteries need to be watered more often, and their capacity decreases. Nearly all batteries will not reach full capacity until cycled 10-30 times. A brand new battery will have a capacity of about 5-10 percent less than the rated capacity.

Inactivity can be extremely harmful to a battery, so it's not a good idea to buy new batteries and save them for later. Either buy them only when you need them or keep them on a continual trickle charge.
